Iv been asked this several times. So I thought I would do this the easy way.
As a beginner into airsoft there are several things to think about.
Figure out what role you want to play as. Do you want to be a rifleman, heavy Gunner, sniper? As a beginner, I would suggest coming in as a rifleman, its the most basic.
Rifleman: any style of M4, Ak47, L85. Decide what kind of weapon you want. A thing to remember, is depending on what kind of gun you want. There arnt alot of differences in the guns. Other than furniture, most of the gear boxs and barrels are all the same. And most all are 6mm.
Heavy Gunner: any style of M249, M240, PKM. Even some M4s and such can be an assault style. Given a big enough box mag, anything can really. The trick to a heavy gunner Is being able to have a high rate of fire, without constant reloading. Given a M249 (SAW) with a 3000 round box mag, and a 9.6-12 Volt battery, makes for some serious cover fire. This is where things get expensive. Most SAW style weapons are going to start tunning around $250+. ANd require serious maintanance. So I would not sugest this class for beginners.
Sniper: any style of M24, APS2, PSG1, M700. There are 3 main types of sniper guns, Spring, Electric, and Gas. Springers are suggested for beginners. Easy to work on and upgrade. Most run for about $80+, with upgrades not being to expensive, and not very time consuming. But they lack on power and range. Electric snipers are more powerfull, but a little harder to upgrade, being that they are mainly an AEG. Then theres Gas Snipers. These are the mother of airsoft sniping. Probly the an in between with upgrades. Thier not to hard to work on, but then again, parts are hard to find or have to be custom made, and are usually pricey. But either stock, or upgraded, these things have some power. factory, with a tightbore barell, and you have range and accuracy. But you have to rmemeber, sniping with airsoft takes patcience. Because of the range of airsoft, you gotta reel them in to under 100 feet or so. Cost varies between 80+-1000+. Plus maintanance cost. So, I would not suggest this for beginners.
Now, figuring in, a basic load, AEG-Ammo-gear,
JG M4: $115-$120
5000 count ammo: $10
Extra high cap mag/box set of midcaps: $25-$45
Basic Chest Rig: $20
So for $200 or under can get you into a game.
